Setting Healthy Boundaries: Why It Matters and How to Start
By Helena Roberson, M.A, NCC, LPC-S

Boundaries are the invisible lines that define where you end and another person begins. They protect your energy, your time, and your emotional well-being. Yet many people struggle with setting and maintaining them.
What Are Healthy Boundaries?
Healthy boundaries aren't about building walls or being selfish. They're about clearly communicating your needs, limits, and expectations in a way that respects both yourself and others. Boundaries can be physical, emotional, time-related, or digital.
Why Boundaries Feel So Hard
If you grew up in a family where boundaries were blurred, dismissed, or punished, setting them as an adult can trigger guilt, anxiety, or fear of rejection. These feelings are normal—and they're exactly the kind of patterns therapy can help you work through.
Practical Steps to Get Started
Start small. Identify one situation where you consistently feel drained or resentful. Practice stating your need clearly and directly. Use 'I' statements rather than accusations. Remember that a boundary is about your behavior, not controlling someone else's.
At Better You Counseling, we help clients develop the confidence and skills to establish boundaries that honor their well-being while maintaining meaningful connections.
