LGBTQIA+ Affirming Therapy: What It Means and Why It Matters

For LGBTQIA+ individuals, finding a therapist who truly understands and affirms your identity is essential. Affirming therapy doesn’t just mean tolerance—it means your therapist actively validates your experiences and understands the unique challenges you face.

What Makes Therapy ‘Affirming’?

LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy is grounded in the understanding that diverse sexual orientations and gender identities are natural variations of human experience—not disorders to be fixed. An affirming therapist uses correct names and pronouns without hesitation, understands the impact of minority stress, doesn’t pathologize your identity, recognizes the effects of discrimination and family rejection, and creates a space where you can explore your identity freely.

Unique Mental Health Considerations

LGBTQIA+ individuals face disproportionately high rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation—not because of their identity, but because of societal stigma, discrimination, and rejection. Minority stress theory explains how the chronic stress of navigating a world that may not accept you takes a measurable toll on mental health.

Finding the Right Fit

When searching for an affirming therapist, look for practitioners who specifically mention LGBTQIA+ affirming care on their website or profile, have training or experience with gender and sexuality issues, and are recommended by local LGBTQIA+ community resources. Don’t settle for a therapist who makes you feel like you need to educate them about your identity.

Better You Counseling is proud to offer LGBTQIA+ affirming care at our Southlake practice and through telehealth across Texas. Everyone deserves a therapist who sees them fully and supports them unconditionally.
